Telescope Accessories

Buying a telescope is just the first step. It won’t take long before you’ll want some extras. Acessories vary from books to eyepieces, focusers, digital imaging acessories and many others. Green laser pointers can be used to point out constellations direclty in the sky while filters can allow you to see objects better.

Eyepieces, Barlow Lens and Filters

Tele Vue Nagler 11mm Type 6 Telescope Eyepiece

Eyepieces work in conjunction with your telecope to produce specific magnifications and to render the objects of the sky you are pointing at. Eyepiece prices range from $30 to $500 and beyond. The price of an eyepiece is defined by it’s design, purpose and craftmanship. Lens get be made of cheap plastics, or high quality polished glass with high efficiency coatings. A barlow simply attaches to a lens and magnifies the image produced by the lens. In other words, if you have a 20mm lens and a 2x barlow, you don’t need a 10mm lens because using the barlow on the 20mm essentially turns it into a 10mm lens. 2x Barlows are a cheap way to double the usage of your eyepieces so instead of buying 6 different ones, consider buy 3 with a barlow. Finally, filters allow to either safely look at specific objects (like the sun and the moon), while others enhance the overall image quality of a celestial object such as a nebula.

For information on filters, read our telescope eyepiece filters page.

Collimation Tools

Reflector telescopes require regular collimation. Collimation is just a term that describes the alignment process of the mirrors on your telescope. When a telescope is out of collimation, it will produce blurry unfocused images. There are some tools to help you with this process, and a laser collimator is a must have for any owner of a reflector telescope. Learn how ot use one on our telescope collimation page.

Mounts and Tripods

There’s nothing worse than a flimsy mount to hold your telescope, digital camera or binoculars. A high quality mount provides stability and control. Motorized mounts will even point to celestial objects on their own. Just key in the code for the Andromada galaxy and watch your mount do all the work for you!
